Material choice starts with the service, not the finish.

“Stainless steel valve” is not a complete specification. The body, trim, seat, temperature, medium and corrosion conditions all affect the right configuration.

Common material vocabulary in this niche includes cast stainless grades such as CF8, CF8M and CF3M. These labels are useful starting points, but they do not replace the applicable material standard, drawing or certificate.

CF8, CF8M and CF3M

CF8 is commonly used as a cast austenitic stainless reference. CF8M is associated with molybdenum-bearing stainless material and is often considered where chloride or corrosion resistance is important. CF3M is the low-carbon counterpart commonly specified when welding or sensitization concerns affect the design.

The actual suitability depends on the medium, concentration, temperature, pressure, surface condition and the rest of the wetted parts. A buyer should ask for the material designation used on the drawing and the certificate format expected with the order.

Questions to put on the RFQ

  • Which parts are wetted?
  • What fluid and concentration are involved?
  • What are the normal and maximum temperatures?
  • Is a material certificate required?
  • Are the seat, stem and gasket materials defined?

What Hande will confirm

Before a quotation, the request should identify the material grade, size, pressure class, end connection and service. If the information is incomplete, the correct next step is to list the missing data rather than silently substitute a grade.
