Selection guide / check valves

Check valve selection starts with flow direction.

A non-return valve is selected around the way the line operates: flow direction, installation position, velocity, pressure, water hammer risk and maintenance access.

Swing check valves

Swing check valves use a disc that moves away from the seat with forward flow and returns when flow reverses. Confirm the allowed installation position, flow conditions and the space needed for inspection or removal.

Other check valve patterns

Lift, ball, dual-plate wafer and other patterns may suit different pressure-loss, response-time or installation constraints. Do not substitute one pattern for another without checking the line design.

Questions that change the selection

  • Is the line horizontal or vertical?
  • What is the normal and minimum flow?
  • Could reverse flow or water hammer occur?
  • What are the medium, temperature and pressure?
  • Which end connection and inspection records are required?
