The three terms are often placed in one line of a test report, but they do not describe one test. The shell test examines the pressure boundary. A closure or seat test examines leakage across the closed obturator and its seat. A backseat test examines a separate stem backseat feature, where that feature exists.
01 / Separate the evidence
Start with the component under examination.
That separation prevents a common purchasing error: treating a shell-test pass as proof of seat tightness. A sound valve body can still have unacceptable closure leakage. Conversely, a valve can pass a closure test while a pressure-boundary defect remains outside the part of the test being discussed.
02 / Test map
What each test can—and cannot—establish
| Test | Primary question | Report must identify | Does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shell | Does the assembled pressure boundary remain acceptable under the specified production-test condition? | Test medium, applied pressure, duration, visible-leakage acceptance, valve condition and any excluded areas. | Closure tightness, corrosion resistance, fatigue life, fire performance or field service life. |
| Low-pressure closure | How does the closed seating system perform under the specified low-pressure gas test? | Pressure direction, seat being tested, test gas, pressure, time, leakage method and measured result. | Performance at every field differential pressure or temperature. |
| High-pressure closure | How does the seating system perform under the stated high-pressure closure test? | Medium, differential pressure, direction, duration, acceptance class and result. | Fire-safe qualification, fugitive-emission performance or dynamic cycling life. |
| Backseat | Does the backseat feature perform under its specified test condition? | Confirmation that the design has a backseat, valve position, pressure, time and observed leakage. | Permission to repack a live valve. Site procedures and the manufacturer’s IOM remain controlling. |
03 / Test identity
“Zero leakage” is not a complete result.
A leakage statement has meaning only inside a defined measurement. The report should state the medium, pressure, duration, observation or collection method, acceptance limit and actual result. A statement such as “no visible leakage during the specified hydrostatic shell test” is bounded. “The valve has zero leakage” is not.
Hydro test: PASS
Seat leakage: zero
Valve serial no. → test procedure revision → medium → pressure → hold period → permitted leakage → actual result → gauge IDs → signatures
Direction matters as well. A unidirectional seating arrangement, a check valve, and a bidirectional isolation valve do not present the same pressure path. If the applicable standard or project specification requires more than one direction or more than one seat condition, the report should make each result visible rather than collapse them into a single “pass”.
04 / Report review
A useful certificate connects the test to one identifiable valve.
- Valve identity.Purchase order, item or tag, unique serial number, valve type, nominal size, pressure class, body material and end connection.
- Controlling documents.Test standard and edition, product standard, project specification and the factory test-procedure number with revision.
- Test condition.Medium, pressure, temperature where relevant, duration, pressure direction, valve position and any venting or cavity arrangement.
- Acceptance and result.Applicable leakage criterion, observation method, measured leakage where required, and a result for each test—not only an overall pass.
- Measuring equipment.Gauge, transducer or recorder IDs, suitable ranges and calibration validity covering the test date.
- People and intervention.Operator, manufacturer QA, purchaser or third-party witness status, signatures and dates.
- Exception history.Nonconformance, repair, retest and release references when the first test was not accepted.
05 / Evidence boundary
A production pressure test is not a universal qualification.
Uses a separate procedure and evaluates a qualified design under defined fire exposure and post-fire conditions.
Addresses external stem or body-joint leakage over specified thermal and mechanical cycles.
Evaluates performance under a defined temperature procedure and configuration.
Also depends on fluid chemistry, transients, installation, operation, maintenance and ageing.
These distinctions matter on product pages. A factory shell and seat test should not be promoted as evidence that a valve is fire-safe, low-emission, suitable for every gas service or maintenance-free.
06 / Procurement
Define the test before the valve reaches the test bench.
At enquiry stage, identify the product standard, inspection and test standard, editions, additional project requirements, purchaser intervention points and the report package. If pneumatic testing, supplementary NDE, chart recording, third-party witnessing or a special leakage class is required, state it before production.
Provide production pressure testing in accordance with [standard and edition] and [project specification]. Submit the approved test procedure, applicable acceptance criteria, calibrated-instrument records and a serial-number-specific report identifying each required shell, backseat and closure test. List all deviations with the proposal.
For a full document package, use the valve test-report review guide and the valve RFQ checklist.
