Fire testing is a design qualification under defined conditions. It is not a production test applied to every shipped valve, and it does not promise that a valve will remain leak-free or fully functional in every real fire.
01 / Meaning
The test measures bounded performance during and after a defined fire exposure.
ISO 10497:2022 covers fire type-testing requirements for soft- and metal-seated isolation valves. Its official scope identifies evaluation of through-seat leakage, external leakage, cavity overpressure relief for double-seated designs and operability under the specified procedure.
Those results belong to the tested design and the standard’s qualification rules. They do not establish actuator fire performance beyond the scope, field insulation behaviour, flange-joint performance or every possible fire duration.
02 / Evidence
Ask for the report behind the certificate.
A useful submission identifies the testing laboratory, standard and edition, test date, valve manufacturer, model/design, size, class or PN, body and trim materials, seat/seal arrangement and test orientation. It also records the measured results and post-fire operation.
The short certificate should be supported by the complete report or a controlled summary adequate to verify the offered configuration. Marketing text and a logo are not enough.
- IdentityManufacturer, model, drawing and tested valve serial/reference.
- Test basisStandard, edition, laboratory and report number.
- ConfigurationSize, rating, body, trim, seat, seals and stem arrangement.
- ResultsExternal leakage, seat leakage, pressure relief and operability as applicable.
- ExtensionDocumented rule connecting the tested design to the offered valve.
03 / Qualification
The offered valve may be qualified without being the tested size—but the bridge must be visible.
Type-test standards include rules for extending qualification within defined design relationships. The supplier should show how size, pressure rating and materials of the offered valve fall inside that range.
A different stem seal, seat geometry, body joint, cavity-relief arrangement or manufacturing design can affect the qualification. Treat design changes after the test as controlled engineering changes and request an impact review.
04 / Boundaries
Keep fire, emissions, anti-static and production tests separate.
Fire qualification does not replace normal shell and closure testing. Fugitive-emission qualification addresses external leakage over defined thermal/mechanical cycles. Anti-static requirements address electrical continuity through the valve assembly. Each claim needs its own acceptance basis.
This separation also improves datasheets: instead of one crowded “certified” field, list the exact standard, edition, report number and applicable design range.
Design qualification under the selected fire-test standard.
Routine evidence for the manufactured valve’s pressure boundary and closure.
Stem/shaft and body-joint external leakage qualification.
Electrical continuity requirement and verification method.
05 / RFQ
Name the standard and require a design-to-report matrix.
State the applicable fire-test standard and edition, required valve types and whether third-party laboratory accreditation or witness is required. Ask the supplier to identify the exact report used for each offered model.
For a multi-line order, a one-page matrix can connect item number, model, drawing revision, size/class/material and fire-test report. That is far easier to audit than a folder of unrelated certificates.
Fire-safe qualification shall comply with [API 607 or ISO 10497, edition]. Supplier shall submit the complete test-report identification and a qualification matrix demonstrating that each offered design, size, rating, material and seat/seal configuration is covered.

Source basis
- ISO 10497:2022. Official scope and current fourth edition.
- API Standards Plan. Official publication-status source for API standards.
- ISO 5208:2015. Used to distinguish production pressure testing from fire type testing.
Review limit: Qualification decisions require the complete licensed standard and actual test report. Hande fire-safe capability is not claimed here for any model until a model-specific report and qualification matrix are published.
